Litigation in Japan
Q7: What is the role of the Supreme Court in Japan?

The Supreme Court is essentially responsible for the consistent interpretation and application of law in the district courts and high courts. As it does not review factual findings, a party appealing to the Supreme Court must argue that the lower court's judgment is against the law or a Supreme Court precedent. In addition, a party can allege that the lower court has issued a ruling without reasoning or the reasoning is self-contradictory.
