Litigation in Japan
Q3: Are there any other courts for civil disputes?

There are also Family Courts which are located with each District Court and 200 branch offices all over the country. Family Courts' roles are handling of juvenile delinquency cases, divorce, custody cases, inheritance cases and other cases to decide family relationships. Normally for domestic cases such as custody or divorce or inheritance, parties try to sit at mediation tables before adjudication by the judge is given. The divorce cases and certain other cases relating to the ones not settled in the mediation will be handled by another panel at the same Family court.
